My 10 favorite essential oils

I discovered essential oils a few years ago, when I started seeing a natural medicine doctor. I began to make a small collection and learned how to use them, and now I can’t live without them. I like to order them online and organic.

I think many people don’t use essential oils because they don’t know about the benefits and that’s a shame.

Essential oils are for me a precious ally for everyday’s small problems, both physical or emotional. I like the idea of healing with plants instead of swallowing tablets, also because essential oils help the body to balance and get stronger, so to avoid some diseases.

Of course, you have to be careful and no essential oil can replace a doctor’s advice or treatment if necessary.

So here are some using advice, and if you’re interested in the subject, don’t hesitate to find more informations, first because it’s fascinating and second because you never know too much about health.

Essential oils can be used with an essential oil evaporator, inhalation, dermal application or internal use, depending on the oil and using. In case of dermal application it’s always advised to mix it with a neutral oil such as coconut or almond oil.

My list of 10 favorite essential oils :

1. Lavender

Lavender essential oil is a multiple tasks. I use it for its relaxing benefits that help for sleeping, you just have to breath it to pour a few drops around you nose or in your bed to create a calming atmosphere. It is also efficient to repulse insects, ants, mosquitos or flies and to soothe the skin after sunburn or mosquito bite. It’s antiseptic and can heal in case of injury.

2. Tea tree

I use this oil since my teenage years, this great time when you have to fight acne. Tea tree is a precious friend because it can fight many skin infections. It kills bacterias, a drop on the infected part and it will heal more quickly. Tea tree oil stimulates the body and helps avoiding winter colds if you use it regularly, in diffusion for example.

3. Petit Grain

This oil has a very nice smell, it reminds me like citrus. The oil has action over the mind and helps balancing the nerves, I use it at night before sleeping, directly on the skin. It can also be used when you feel down or stressed, because of its calming properties, it’s like a shot of positive energy !

4. Peppermint

For a long time, the smell of peppermint was my « trademark », because I had often headaches and I used it all the time, so most of the time my friend could « smell » me coming before they saw me, that was funny ! So this oil is helpful when you have frequent headaches, a few drops on the temples and forehead and it’s gone. It can be used also in case of nausea, because it has action on the digestion.

5. Basil

Basil essential oil has a very strong smell, that not everybody will like. But it’s efficient to dynamise digestion, you can massage your stomach with the oil, it has also antiseptic properties on the bowels. I use it mostly at night, so not to be disturbed by the smell during the day.

6. Frangipani

Frangipani tree is growing in tropical areas and produces flowers which smell like paradise. I bought this oil in Bali and unfortunately I don’t know where to buy it somewhere else, but I love its smell so much that I couldn’t not mention it. I don’t know any of its curating properties apart from taking you to an exotic paradise just by smelling it. I use it as a perfume or to make scented candles.

7. Tarragon

I have to say that this oil has not a very good smell, but for me its the most efficient to reduce stomach pain during period. As a massage on stomach and kidneys, it’s antispasmodic. Many other oils are known for the same use, such as marjoram, geranium and rosewood. I guess you just have to find the one that works for you.

8. Ravintsara

Ravintsara is a small tree from Madagascar, it’s very useful because the oil is a strong anti-infective especially for the breathing system. At the beginning of winter, to prevent catching colds or flu and after strong AC which I personally don’t like at all. Ravintsara helps the body to get rid of infections. By dermal application, inhalation or with an evaporator, I bring it everywhere.

9. Lemongrass

Known for repulsing insects, I prefer to use this oil instead of chemical products from the market. The oil helps to avoid mosquito bites, the best is to use it in a room with an evaporator. As it also kills bacterias, it will clean your home naturally.

10. Niaouli

Niaouli is a plant from New-Caledonia, the oil is antiviral and antiseptic. I use it in combination with ravintsara when my throat is painful or when I am sick, by breathing it to clear the breathing system. It can also be used against cystitis and help the body to get stronger, it’s almost a natural antibiotic.
